The supply of electricity is fully deregulated. Companies offer "bespoke" fixed price contracts, but such is the volatility of the electricity market, no one supplier is dominant for any length of time. The marketplace is continually changing as new players enter, build up market share and consolidate their position, but with the credit crunch some have overstretched themselves and gone out of business.

Although the domestic market is fully deregulated, consumers are reluctant to change, either because of misplaced loyalty, or because they have changed once and experienced difficulties within the changeovers proceed smoothly keeping in touch with the new supplier until the process has been completed. Consumers who have never changed supplier are generally paying as much as 20% more than necessary.
Generally, long term contracts do not apply to the Domestic Market, consumers are free to change energy supplier with just 28 days notice.
Prospects for 2009
2008 was the year of high electricity prices, peaking in late summer. Since last autumn there has been significant reductions in wholesale prices & this has been reflected in lower commercial contracts, especially following reduced national demand due to the 'credit crunch'.
Little change in prices is foreseen over the next 12 months, thereafter prices may rise in line with the increase in economic activity.
The constraining factor in the gas market is lack of storage capacity leaving the U.K. vulnerable to paying higher prices following the onset of extreme winter weather.
