The supply of gas is fully deregulated. Companies offer "bespoke" fixed price contracts, but such is the volatility of the gas market, no one supplier is dominant for any length of time. The marketplace is continually changing as new players enter, build up market share and consolidate their position, but in the process some have overstretched themselves and gone out of business.

Although the domestic market is fully deregulated, consumers are reluctant to change, either because of misplaced loyalty, or because they have changed once and experienced difficulties within the changeovers proceed smoothly keeping in touch with the new supplier until the process has been completed. Consumers who have never changed supplier are generally paying as much as 20% more than necessary.

Generally, long term contracts do not apply to the Domestic Market, consumers are free to change energy supplier with just 28 days notice.
